MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is a lightweight material made from wood shavings and residue bound together by a synthetic resin. MDF can be coated with opaque or clear lacquer.

Matte or glossy opaque lacquer is applied in multiple fine layers and can be used on hard woods like maple and cherry, as well as on MDF. Lacquer comes in a wealth of colors, including custom shades.
